STURBRIDGE-Most of the students
at Tantasqua Regional Junior High School were just excited that
it was Friday, but on April 9, students in two classes had an extra
reason to be excited - a pizza party.
The students who raised the most money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma
Society’s “Pennies for Patients” fundraiser were
rewarded with a pizza party, sponsored by the society, during Friday’s
lunch period.
By donating change through their advisory classes, together the
students raised $1,400.
“We wanted the kids [who didn’t win] to see what they
were missing out on, to encourage them for next time, and we also
wanted to make it more of a celebration for the kids who did win,”
National Junior Honor Society Advisor and English teacher Kathy
Troy said. The National Junior Honor Society sponsored the fundraiser.
Art teacher Carol Willard’s seventh-grade advisory raised
the most in that grade with $185 and Instructional Assistant Giovina
Ferrante-George’s eighth-grade advisory raised the most in
that grade with $85.
Since 1994, millions of dollars have been raised in pennies and
other spare change by more than 10 million elementary, middle and
high school students throughout the country.
