STURBRIDGE – In a region where most available
space has been carved and parceled, it's somewhat of a geographic
marvel: 262 acres of historic, untouched, privately-owned land.
After 340 years, it is still intact; still operating as a private
dairy farm.
The expansive property, now known as Barrett Farm and spanning Douty
Road and Holland Road, has been on and off the market for several
years, and is currently up for sale and listed at $2.5 million.
Sturbridge identified it as a "priority" for open-space
preservation in 2007 - but almost three years later, its acquisition
continues to elude the town.
“It's an absolutely beautiful piece of property," said
Penny Dumas, planning board member and chair of the community preservation
committee.
However, she added, “You can't buy everything you want all
at once.”
